Ashley Young: ‘Manchester United must beat Wolfsburg’
Ashley Young has revealed that he is “in the dark” with regards to playing for England but would still like to play for his country.
Per Dutton, the comment was clearly not meant as a major criticism as Van Gaal had previously praised Young’s “fantastic” 2014-15 season.
Young may not be Neymar, but he has been very effective under Van Gaal when he has been given his opportunities. “But he is not a Neymar”, but he agreed a new three-year deal in August, although he has been largely restricted to appearances from the bench this term.
He started the Premier League opener against Spurs but since has been in LVG’s XI just twice against PSV and Ipswich in the League Cup.
However, the 30-year-old attacker, who has been used in a number of positions by the manager, has ignored Van Gaal’s comments and is confident that the Red Devils boss understands his capabilities and the value he brings to the team.
“I’m not too sure about England situation”, said Young.
“I was delighted to sign the contract”. Obviously players come in and there is competition.
United manager Louis van Gaal guided the club back into European football’s elite competition following a one-season hiatus. I have had that competition throughout my career.
“We played well in Eindhoven and it was disappointing not to get a result”. I am as in the dark as you.
“We just have to keep playing with confidence”. I will look to give 100 per cent when I am called upon. “I know I have to play well for United to have a chance, and then you hope the England manager comes knocking on the door”.
“I know my ability”.
“We have so many who have played Champions League football over those years”. Whenever I am called upon I will go out and do that. Every player is there to do a job. “He has that headache”.
Shaw picked up a serious knee injury in United’s defeat by PSV in the Champions League, and Young, who has deputised for him in the past, admits he could move back into defence.
He added: “It is important to get a win against Wolfsburg”.
“This is what a club like United is all about, wanting to be in the biggest competitions and we’re looking forward to the game on Wednesday”.
“It was a disappointing start to the European campaign, especially the possession and chances we had in Eindhoven”.
“It’s always nice to be in the Champions League, we fought hard to get back into it”.
