Assad allies say US attack on Syria air base crosses “red lines”
Friday’s strike on a Syrian airbase marks the first direct USA attack on the Damascus regime, raising questions about the potential impact on American forces working to defeat the Islamic State group.
Washington D.C. (USA), Apr. 10 (ANI): U.S. President Donald Trump is discussing with members of his administration the possibility of introducing sanctions against Russian Federation and Iran for supporting the Syrian Government.U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on Sunday. Russian Federation has also deployed a warship to the region off the course of Syria. The government refers to all those fighting against it as terrorists. Graham isn’t saying where the Americans would be sent.
The Lebanese militant group has invested thousands of fighters in the defense of Assad’s government.
“Both sides noted the inadmissibility of aggressive US actions against a sovereign state in violation of worldwide law”, the statement said. In January 2016, the OPCW announced that all chemical weapons in Syria had been destroyed. What happens next will determine whether this is seen as a blip in a failed U.S. policy toward Syria, or the beginning of a much needed course correction.
“What the Americans did is a strategic mistake and offense”. Yet they did so without any clear guidance from Washington on the next steps in Syria.
Syria’s disarmament, which was carried out amid a chaotic civil war, has been the subject of some doubt, and there is evidence that the Islamic State group and other insurgents have acquired chemical weapons. The Sunni rulers of Saudi Arabia are in a power struggle for regional dominance with Iran’s Shiite government and view Tehran’s support of Assad as a threat to the region.
Back on Friday, dozens of USA missile hit Shayrat airfield in western Syrian province of Homs in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack on the rebel-held town. The Syrian government has denied using chemical weapons.
The new strikes came as Russian Federation, the Syrian regime’s main ally, sent a frigate armed with cruise missiles to a Syrian port in an apparent show of force in response to the United States strike.
Mr Mattis said the strike had shown the U.S. would “not passively stand by while [Syrian President Bashar al-Assad] murders innocent people with chemical weapons”.
Despite worldwide agreement that Tuesday’s launched chemical attacks were carried out by the Assad-led government, Russian Federation and Iran have defended their mutual ally. “And so we would want to appeal rationally to Russia”, McCaster said on “Fox News Sunday”.
The Russian Foreign Ministry criticized Johnson’s decision, saying it showed a lack of understanding of events in Syria. Turkey provides military support to some of Syria’s opposition forces. US President Donald Trump said there was no doubt Assad was responsible for the attack. An alliance with traditional partners and local allies can contain Iran and defeat Daesh, and these strikes are an opportunity to strengthen the crucial relationships in building such a coalition, which have frayed in the last eight years.
He said Russian Federation should also be asked how it didn’t know that Syria was planning a chemical attack since it had advisers at the Syrian airfield.
