Assault arrest for man who hit Sacramento mayor with pie
A man smacked Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson in the face with a pie at a charity dinner, and the former National Basketball Association star went on the defensive, his top aide said.
A man walked up to the two-term mayor at a community benefit at a local high school, grabbed him and slammed a pie in his face, said Crystal Strait, the mayor’s press secretary.
She that Johnson “did not have any significant injuries”, though one staffer was receiving medical care Thursday for a minor injury that occurred while helping to restrain Thompson.
Both police and Strait said Thompson was not previously known to the mayor and his staff. While he admitted that he didn’t witness Johnson getting hit with a pie or the fight that followed, he said he saw the aftermath of the altercation that reportedly took place between the two men.
UFC star Uriah Faber was at the event, and was later brought up to the podium, where he and Johnson “joked about the assault”.
According to the SACPD, Thompson “assaulted” Mayor Kevin Johnson at an event on the evening of September 21.
One witness told the East Bay Express that Johnson tackled the protester and began punching his face repeatedly, landing five to 10 blows.
The event, called the Seeds of HOPE Harvest Dinner, was part of Sacramento’s “Farm to Fork” week and was created to involve high school students in preparing the meal. “He is home with his family … The whole thing is just shocking”.
Faber said Johnson told him what happened in the moments before. The Phoenix Police Department investigated but did not file charges. The three-time All-Star helped the Suns reach the 1993 NBA Finals alongside teammate Charles Barkley, only to lose to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.
Johnson used Twitter later in the night tell everyone he’s ok and thank the police.
