Aston Villa pay tribute to Dalian Atkinson with umbrellas and minute’s applause
The striker, signed from Fulham for 12million this summer, scored his first Villa goal but it was not enough to spare Gollini’s blushes at the final whistle.
McCormack struck in the 25th minute, shortly after Villa Park had risen to salute Atkinson, who died on Monday. Despite being put under considerable pressure by Huddersfield in the second half, Pierluigi Gollini was in fine form for much of the match, stopping repeated one-on-ones to keep Villa ahead.
Jordan Ayew turned sharply on the edge of the box and unleashed a fierce drive which had keeper Danny Ward hurrying to his right to push it away. Gestede bagged a brace for the Villans in the 3-0 win – the flawless response following two defeats in four days to start the season’.
Fans applaud on the 10th minute, in memory of former player Dalian Atkinson, at Villa Park.
Huddersfield got more into the game but their rising confidence was quashed by McCormack.
Tshibola delivered a deep cross which found Grealish and the midfielder’s miscued volley looped to the far post for McCormack to head in. However, his clearance rebounded directly off the back of Michael Hefele and into Villa’s net.
Villa poured forward and created a succession of opportunities.
