ASUS ZenWatch 2 to cost around $170, available from October
But we did learn full details on the forthcoming ZenWatch 2 including its terrific pricing which undercuts the Apple Watch by some margin.
Asus has put a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor inside, with 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of internal memory, plus the whole device has IP67 standard water resistance.
The new models add Wi-Fi as a connectivity option, which means that you’ll no longer be on a Bluetooth leash. As of right now, ASUS states that the ZenWatch 2 will hit Europe in October, priced at €149.
Asus CEO Jerry Shen has confirmed that the Zenfone Max will be unveiled at the Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA) 2015 along with the Zenfone zoom this coming 4 of September.
Asus ZenWatch 2 specifications and features: The smartwatch features a 1.63-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 320×320 pixels.
Asus has also introduced new software in the ZenWatch 2, such as ZenWatch Message, which allows users to communicate directly via text or emojis. It’ll will list for 149 euros (roughly $167, though USA pricing and availability have not been set). However, the company warns that the two-day battery life of the smartwatch can only be achieved if it will be used to function as a plain watch, with no other smart capabilities that will eventually consume power. ZenFone Zoom also benefits from exclusive ASUS BoostMaster technology for turbo-speed charging that takes the battery from zero to 60% in just 39 minutes.
Asus is also offering a wide range of straps in a variety of materials and colours for further personalisation of the ZenWatch 2.
Being one of the latest Android Wear devices to market, the ZenWatch 2 will officially play nice with both Android and iOS, albeit with stifled functionality on the iPhone side of the fence (blame Apple, not Asus or Google for that one).
If the ZenWatch 2 has a USP, it’s customisation.
While early rumours hinted at 7 days of battery life, Asus only claims 2 hours. The new watch also uses a magnetic clip-on charger rather than the cradle from last year’s model, but you’ll still find those pin connectors on the back of the case (no wireless charging here).
