At first press conference, Speaker Ryan vows to “go on offense”
And although believing Paul Ryan will oppose President Obama in every way imaginable is not all that hard, believing that Obama is “untrustworthy” with regard to immigration reform because of his past actions belies the truth of the matter and simply rewrites the president’s history in attempting to get immigration legislation passed. “He is respected, experienced and trusted within politics and when addressing Wisconsin agricultural issues”.
But he said broader topics such as immigration reform and tax reform are non-starters, as well as anything else substantial until after November 2016.
Now, there will be no immigration bill, not in an election year, not when the president is a lame duck, and definitely not when all an ambitious politician needs to become speaker is to let a few of his supposed convictions go.
“We’re going to go on offense on ideas and give the country a bold alternative agenda because we don’t think the country’s heading in the right direction right now”, he said. No, we can’t. But that should not stop us from trying and from offering ideas’. The same is true for the campaigns for the Republican presidential nomination.
That should allow time to make wiser, longer-term spending decisions on military needs, he said, while also rooting out waste and abuse in current programs that tends to root and fester when the massive defense budget is funded on an ad-hoc basis. After denying a flurry of requests to take the job, Ryan eventually agreed to run for the position, because many in the Party felt he was the only man capable of such a role in this crucial time. We want to rebuild the military. Yeah. There’s a big difference, a big gap there.
For all of his lofty talk about bipartisanship before he took the gavel, new Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) went directly to the right wing mattresses in his first news conference as Speaker, during which he refused to rule out the House using riders to get their way.
Increasing border security and pursuing reforms within the country’s interior are possible topics the GOP could negotiate with Obama, Ryan said.
During the 112th and 113th Congresses, Ryan was a chairman to the House Budget Committee. I really hope those Democrat who recalled how much they enjoyed working with him are spot on. “Presidents don’t write laws”, Ryan said. “That is why we feel that we have an obligation to the hard-working citizens of this country to show them how we would do things differently to tackle our country’s problems before they tackle us and to get things fixed, to advance our principles, to show how we can make things better for people who are struggling in America”.
Asked by Van Sustern if he has a “vision” for the House under his leadership, Ryan said he wants to open up the legislative process more, pointing proudly to 100 amendments that are being considered to a highway funding bill.
“We have a bicameral legislature, and they need our votes to pass anything, pass it through the Senate”, Reid said, repeating the stance that Democrats will not accept any riders that could not pass in the Senate on their own. In 2014, Republicans told voters, “Just give us the Senate and things will be different”.
