In an emotional plea for stronger gun laws, US President Barack Obama said it did not make sense that the US Constitution prohibits any modest regulation of how deadly weapons are used.

Ahead of a candlelight vigil mourning the loss of life at Umpqua Community College, Sheriff John Hanlin said he would not confirm the name of the shooter involved in the mass shooting Thursday.

The congressman who represents the southwest Oregon city said the incident was a “heartbreaking tragedy”. Sutherlin is about 13 miles north of that city.

Authorities offered no motive for the shooting.

“I suspect this is going to start a discussion across the country about how community colleges prepare themselves for events like this”, he said. “We must not allow, nor shall we tolerate, the actions of criminals, no matter how heinous the crimes, to prompt politicians to enact laws that will infringe upon the liberties of responsible citizens who have broken no laws”.

Officials identified the gunman as 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer and say he opened fire at the college Thursday, killing nine people and wounding seven others before dying during an exchange of gunfire with officers.

Shots were reported at Umpqua Community college in Roseburg at 10:38 a.m. local time, prompting a massive police response.

Mr Hanlin said the names of the victims would not be released for 24 to 48 hours pending notification of next of kin.
