At Least 26 Killed In Iraq Bomb And Gun Attack
People gather at the site of a suicide auto bomb in the Karrada shopping area, in Baghdad, Iraq July 3, 2016.
A refrigerator truck packed with explosives drove into Karrada, one of Baghdad’s central districts, where it was detonated.
At least 20 people were killed and 50 others wounded on Thursday evening in an attack on a Shi’ite mausoleum north of Baghdad, security sources said.
Iraqi officials said in the wake of the attack that the truck bomb had in fact come from Diyala province, to the east of the city.
As a result, outpourings of grief don’t always align with death tolls.
ISIS had called for its supporters to strike during the Muslim holy month, resulting in a string of deadly attacks linked to the terror group around the world, from the United States to Turkey, Bangladesh and France.
Earlier on Thursday, the ministry had put the toll at 281 and it rose as more people, registered as missing, were identified as dead, Rudaini said.
There is growing outrage amongst the Iraqi general public regarding its government’s perceived inability to prevent bombings and attacks of this nature.
The discrepancies in the numbers could not immediately be reconciled.
The attack, claimed by the militant group Islamic State, which the government is battling in the north and west, was the deadliest of the many vehicle bombings in Baghdad since the 2003 US-led invasion.
