At Least 43 Killed in Storms, Tornadoes
The surveying continued into Sunday.
Over the weekend, six people died when two separate vehicles drove into flooded roadways in south-central Missouri, Pulaski County Sheriff Ronald Long said; four of them were global soldiers temporarily stationed at an Army base.
City officials said this is only the second time since 1950 that such a powerful tornado struck the area. North of Garland, three people died in Collin County, including an infant.
Several bridges in southeastern Missouri counties also are closed because of flooding. Scores of people were injured in the region, officials said. Rowlett has a 24-hour curfew in the affected areas.
“The little boy was hanging on to the back of the auto”, Tyler said Saturday.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Matt Bishop said that a tornado of that strength is very rare in a metropolitan area. More flooding is expected as river levels continue rising around the state. The weather service said damage indicated it was likely an EF-3 tornado, with winds up to 165 miles per hour. Days of tumultuous weather have led to 43 deaths overall – 11 in Texas, plus five in IL, eight in Missouri and 19 in the Southeast. Vehicles were mangled, power lines fell and trees were toppled. Then we went across the hall to make sure everyone was OK. The mayor encouraged people to stay off the roads to keep them clear for emergency responders. “Pray for those that have property damage”. He said there were reports of numerous houses damaged along with an apartment community. Fifteen people were taken by ambulance to hospitals with various injuries, although none appear to be life-threatening.
Some 25,000 people were without power on Sunday morning. Garland Animal Services employees are taking lost pets to the city shelter at 600 Tower Street.
“We have destroyed and damaged homes”.
In the town of Rowlett near Garland, police spokesman Det.
“The storm system will gradually pull away by Tuesday, but flooding and treacherous travel could (linger) into midweek”, the National Weather Service said.
Collin County Judge Keith Self toured damaged areas in Copeville and Farmersville.
Kevin Taylor, a church pastor in Glenn Heights, south of Dallas, described to WFAA how his church began collapsing around him.
“God has been blessing us”, Taylor said.

Saturday night, tornadoes in the Dallas area killed 11 people and injured dozens.
Intense rain and flooding are expected across much of the state Monday, along with snow and freezing rain in the northern part of Missouri. High winds will drive wind chills as low as 10 below zero and cause low visibility due to blowing and drifting snow.
It warned of “blizzard conditions” from west Texas into Kansas, and “hazardous ice accumulations” in Oklahoma.
Flash floods, tornadoes and now snow have destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses and caused transport chaos across southern and western parts of the United States.
