At least one killed in US school explosion
“The blast leveled the center of a building at the upper school at Minnehaha Academy”. Earlier, it was stated that three people were reported as missing but one person was found around noon, uninjured.
Firefighters from Minneapolis and St. Paul were on scene “extinguishing fire, searching for victims and extricating”, Minneapolis Fire tweeted at 10:48 a.m. Right now, though, the focus is on the rescue operations as authorities believe there are several people still trapped under the rubble of the collapsed structure.
Fire Chief John Fruetel confirmed a body was pulled from the rubble just before a 2.45pm local time.
“As soon as they said, ‘Hey, we smell gas, we gotta get out, ‘ it exploded”, said Tramon Vanlear, who was inside the gym. “You can see the destructive force”. He remains in critical condition at HCMC.
Four of them remained hospitalized late Wednesday. Previously, it was reported that three people were #missing but later, one was found with injuries.
“I knew something bad had happened”, she said. “Well, I guess I hung onto the ball”.
A gas leak during construction work at the Minnehaha Academy likely caused the blast, which sent five people to the hospital, fire officials said.
Tuition fees at the Minnehaha Academy cost between $12,470 A year for kindergarteners and $21,280 for those in Grade 12.
All summer program students and staff have been accounted for.
Minnehaha Academy is a K-12th grade private Christian school with about 825 students enrolled. He said contract workers were in the building working on the boiler system when the natural gas explosion occurred. The academy’s lower school was unaffected. “As our receptionist, she welcomed everyone with a smile and was always willing to go the extra mile to help our students, families, and staff”, the statement read. “Ruth was a great friend of mine a wonderful human being I will miss her immensely RIP my good friend”. Minnehaha Academy’s website lists Duffey as an assistant coach for the boys soccer team. He says the building is unstable and noted that making it safe for rescuers will take time.
