Atlanta mayor to unveil plans for future of Turner Field
ATLANTA (AP) – Turner Field, the home of the Atlanta Braves and the 1996 Olympics, will get its “third life” when Georgia State University converts it to a college football stadium, Atlanta city leaders said Thursday. “In concert with our partners at Carter, we are focused on pursuing a dynamic development plan that will bring new energy and vitality to this historically significant part of Atlanta”.
Georgia State University’s plan for redevelopment of the site will now go to the University System of Georgia Board of Regents for review and approval.
Oakwood Development and Atlanta-based Carter & Associates were also participants in the purchase and sale agreement.
Once the Braves move out on December 31, Georgia State will begin renovations to turn the field into a football stadium.
Reed told the reporters, elected officials, neighborhood residents and other guests that the development will make the area one of the most attractive, vibrant, and livable places in the city.
Georgia State representatives have also said that they wish to turn Turner Field into a baseball stadium as well. Additionally, the football and baseball stadiums will be surrounded by university housing and facilities as well as shopping and restaurants. Many believe the project will help revitalize the community, including Mayor Kasim Reed.
The project is likely to spark additional demand for vacant or underused real estate now surrounding Turner Field, in a neighborhood that has been challenged for decades with decay.
“I’m optimistic”, said Mitchell.
“This represents a promise kept to a community that remains strong despite daunting odds”, he said.
Our AJC colleague Scott Trubey asked Georgia State president Mark Becker Thursday whether the project needs state funds, and he declined to answer.
Turner Field was originally built for the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta. Plus, they would have to take into consideration the scheduling of Atlanta United FC’s upcoming inaugural 2017 season.
The Georgia State team has been quiet about their plans during negotiations.
