Atlantans Want to Carve Outkast Into the Side of a Mountain – Flipped
Williams acknowledges that the monument poses different challenges than does the Confederate flag itself, which has been the topic of hot debate across the South since Dylann Roof admitted to killing nine parishioners at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina. The depictions of Confederate president Jefferson Davis and Confederate Army generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson are carved on the north side of the 825-foot high granite mountain. “However, the carving of Davis, Lee, and Jackson on the side of Stone Mountain only represents a small, regrettable time in the history of the Peach State”, the petition reads.
Mack Williams has launched a petition on MoveOn.org to have OutKast members Andre 3000 and Big Boi chiseled onto Stone Mountain.
“I view Stone Mountain as more of a museum-type archaeological place of remembrance for those who want to remember back then and they have a right to remember back then and the park is there”, he said.
Just days after the Atlanta NAACP called for the images of Confederate leaders to be sandblasted off Stone Mountain, a new petition has emerged calling for two of the state’s most well-known musical artists to be added to the display.
I believe that Daddy Fat Sacks [Big Boi] and Three Stacks [André 3000] should be carved riding in a Cadillac (as is their wont). According to the Stone Mountain Memorial Association, it once stood as a symbol of Native American relations during George Washington’s presidency. The mountain’s carving is bigger than a football field and holds the record as the largest relief sculpture in the world.
“Outkast are two of the greatest Georgians in the history of our state”, Williams says. “It’s high time we added a bit more of our history and culture to this monument”, he wrote.
Started by artist Mack Williams, it’s addressed to Georgia’s state house, state senate and Gov. Nathan Deal. “It’s about time the Empire State of the South paid proper tribute to them”.
