Attempted Jerusalem knife attack, assailant shot dead
Israel has started deploying soldiers to cities in an effort to quell escalating violence between Israelis and Palestinians. One of the men who attacked the bus was shot and killed while the other two attackers were shot and apprehended.
The move followed a call last week from Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat – himself a licensed and trained gun owner – urging Israelis with gun licenses to carry their guns with them when they leave their homes.
Shalom said that Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked was also pursuing legislation which would bar the families of alleged attackers killed in incidents from receiving welfare benefits. Palestinians who live in East Jerusalem carry the same identity papers as Israelis and, unlike their brethren in the West Bank, can travel throughout Israel.

Israel should not allow them to “enjoy respect and ceremonies”, he said.
The funerals are a frequent flashpoint for clashes and often include calls for revenge. Then the Secretary of State seemingly excused Palestinian terrorists for their barbaric actions against Israeli Jews.
During the ongoing wave of unrest, assailants have used cars to ram into Israelis, and on Tuesday briefly seized control of a city bus and attacked passengers, killing two.
Palestinian officials condemned the security measures – the most serious clampdown in the Jerusalem area since a Palestinian uprising a decade ago – as collective punishment.
Israel has adamantly denied the allegations and accused Palestinian leaders of inciting the violence and spreading lies.
The violence has been partly triggered by Palestinians’ anger over what they see as increased Jewish encroachment on Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound, also revered by Jews as the site of two destroyed Jewish temples. Israel said its aircraft had targeted a Hamas facility in the Gaza Strip after rockets were fired across the border.
In recent weeks, eight Israelis have died in a string of stabbings, shootings and the stoning of a vehicle, while 30 Palestinians have been killed – 13 of them identified by Israel as attackers, the rest killed in stone-throwing clashes with Israeli forces.
Police checkpoints are to be set up on Wednesday afternoon in villages around Jerusalem, scene of most of the deadly attacks, according to Sky News Arabia’s correspondent on the ground.
