Attorney: Fatal Crash Suspect Is ‘Not A Monster’
However, authorities on Sunday did name the adult victims they say Adacia mowed over when her vehicle allegedly plowed through dozens of men, women and children at Oklahoma State University’s annual parade.
The driver, identified as Adacia Chambers, 25, was taken into custody for driving under the influence after the crash Saturday in Stillwater.
Coleman said that he has ruled out alcohol as the cause of the crash, as Chambers was at the Oklahoma State University “walk around” the night before the crash with her grandmother and aunt.
The lawyer said Chambers was unable to tell him what happened during the incident, and it seemed to him that she may have blacked out.
Coleman said he has requested a mental competency evaluation for Chambers.
Witnesses described a scene of chaos as bodies flew into the air from the impact and landed on the road. One minute, McNitt was standing beside his stepfather, 54-year-old Leo Schmitz, near the end of the parade route. Hospitals initially said five were critically injured, but one of those was upgraded to fair condition on Sunday.
“It’s been a insane 24 hours”, Mark McNitt said, tearing up as he told reporters about the crash and its aftermath.
Police said those victims were 23-year-old OSU student Nakita Prabhakar and 65-year-old Stillwater residents Bonnie Jean Stone and Marvin Lyle Stone, CNN reports.
“All I remember is a gush of wind, and then the sound”.
“While our thoughts and prayers are with the Oklahoma State University community tonight following the tragic events during OSU’s homecoming parade this morning, it is with deep sadness that I ask you to extend those sentiments to the family and friends of one of our own students”, wrote President Don Betz.
One of the injured had been a baby sitter for Lewis, she said.
“I’ve lived here my whole life and this blows my mind”, she said. “We realized she didn’t make it”, she said.
