Attorney General Kane arraigned; preliminary hearing set
Kane won her post in a landslide 2012 election after campaigning as an alternative to the male-dominated and partisan establishment.
Kane is charged with perjury, obstruction of justice, and official oppression, stemming from a scheme to cover up and lie about a grand jury leak aimed at embarrassing a prosecutor with whom she was feuding. “At no time did she believe that she was asking or directing anyone to do anything improper or unlawful”. I have maintained my innocence from the day these allegations surfaced and I continue to do so today.
At 1:30pm, Saturday, Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane voluntarily turned herself in at the Mongomery County Courthouse in Norristown. “Ken Paxton, like all Americans, deserves to have his say in a court of law, rather than be judged in a court of public opinion that is presided over by liberal interest groups”.
Attorney General Kathleen Kane was arraigned Saturday afternoon in suburban Philadelphia on charges including a felony count of perjury.
Whenever a teacher or police officer is charged with a crime, he or she is placed on administrative leave until the matter is resolved, Swetz said.
“The only question is whether it’s paid or not”, he said.
For any public official, this is a devastating report.
Kane did not enter a plea in the proceedings, which lasted about five minutes, and was released on an unsecured $10,000 bail by Judge Cathleen Kelly Rebar.
Rieders agreed, saying that she’s innocent until found guilty.
More serious charges, like corruption or bribery, might compel a stronger argument that she resign. Leaking a story to a newspaper then lying about it doesn’t rise to that level, he said. “Why should we disrupt the whole criminal justice system in Pennsylvania for that?”
“Thank you for accommodating us”, one of her lawyers told Rebar when the arraignment ended. Kane allegedly orchestrated the leak of secret information in order to embarrass political rivals and then worked to obstruct the subsequent investigation of those leaks. Investigators concluded that’s precisely why the information was passed along to the Daily News reporter.
He doesn’t buy the argument that the case is politically motivated. Some have also speculated Montgomery County Commissioners Chairman Josh Shapiro could run against Kane when she is up for re-election in 2016.
Senate leaders have so far declined to call specifically for Kane’s resignation. “We were proud to support her in her race for Attorney General because she is a rising star – and she has the experience and guts a person needs to take a spot on the presidential ticket in 2020 or 2024”. Kane crusaded to get even with her detractors, who took issue with her decision not to file charges against Democratic lawmakers caught on video accepting bribes, the affidavit alleges.
The search terms included the beginning of the email address of special prosecutor Thomas Carluccio, his wife, Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas Judge Carolyn Carluccio, and the names and email addresses of Philadelphia Inquirer reporters.
Though Kane would have 10 days to fight a suspension, Castille said an actual suspension would force her out of office because the state constitution requires the attorney general to have a law license.
