Attorney: Man ignored officer’s commands before shooting
Tulsa, Oklahoma, police released new footage on Monday of Crutcher holding his hands up while being approached by officers.
The death is the latest in a long line of fatal shootings by officers of black men that have led to racial tensions across the States.
“He is not threatening to anyone”, lawyer Benjamin Crump said.
Other activists have referred to the recent national anthem protests, initiated by football player Colin Kaepernick, in the wake of Crutcher’s death.
“What was Terence Crutcher’s crime?” “We need to recognize our privilege and and practice humility, rather than assume our experiences are everyone’s experiences”, Clinton said earlier this year at the NAACP annual convention.
The reaction on social media has been virtually unanimous.
Two videos, one shot from a dashcam, the other from a police helicopter, show that Crutcher was walking toward the vehicle with his hands up before Officer Tyler Turnbough Tasered him and Officer Shelby subsequently shot him.
The officer who pulled the trigger was later identified as Betty Shelby. On Tuesday, the police department reported finding PCP in Crutcher’s auto.
Oklahoma has launched a criminal investigation into the police officer who shot and killed Terence Crutcher, an unarmed black man who was seen on video walking with his hands in the air, Reuters reports.
A police helicopter above also filmed Crutcher’s shooting and officers in the helicopter were heard saying the pastor looked like a “bad dude” moments before he was shot. As we reported on earlier today, police dash cam footage shows Crutcher walking back to his SUV with his hands above his head, when one office tased him and another office shoots him.
Attorney Scott Wood said Crutcher repeatedly failed to comply with Shelby’s commands and reached toward or into his pockets on several occasions despite Shelby’s orders not to do so.
The attorney for Officer Betty Shelby said she is a Drug Recognition Expert and believed Terence Crutcher was under the influence of something, possibly PCP, the night she encountered him. “Time for a taser, I think”, said one officer as four other officer surrounded him. A police spokesman told The Times the officer gave a statement to homicide detectives Monday morning. He died later in hospital, police said.
Shelby’s attorney, Scott Wood, told the Tulsa World that Shelby opened fire and another officer used a stun gun when Crutcher’s “left hand goes through the auto window”.
Shelby, who is white, was one of four police officers who were standing at the rear bumper of Crutcher’s auto as he stood next to his vehicle around 7:45 p.m. Friday. When Shelby first arrived on the scene, she called for backup and claimed Crutcher was not cooperating.
Shelby, a five-year veteran of the police force, was placed on paid administrative leave.
KOKI-TV learned that two officers were in that helicopter, including Shelby’s husband.
The family planned to host another press conference Tuesday afternoon, while We the People announced a rally for Shelby’s arrest on Tuesday evening.
Shelby was the first officer to arrive on the scene after Crutcher’s vehicle broke down. We’ve seen them in action in NY over the past 48 hours because of the terrorist attacks.
