Aubameyang Happy As First Gabonese To Win — Glo-CAF Award
Yaya Toure says the decision not to award him the African Footballer of the Year for a fifth successive year has brought “shame to Africa”.
Yaya Toure had been named African footballer of the year by Caf for the last four years and was recently crowned by the fans as the BBC African footballer of the year for 2015.
Swansea City and Ghana striker Andre Ayew was third on 112 points. The feat by Aubameyang ended the four-year reign of Toure, which lasted 2011 to 2014.
Nevermind that Touré’s 2015 was a step down from his prior few seasons, when you could’ve made the case that he was the best central midfielder doing it, and that Aubameyang’s transition from really good player into a truly great one (he scored 27 goals in 27 games for BVB in 2015) makes him a perfectly deserving victor.
Borussia Dortmund star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has ruled out a switch to Arsenal, following reports that Arsene Wenger’s side had launched a sizeable bid for the Bundesliga man.
Compatriot Bruno Metsu has also clinched two Coach of the Year Awards when he was in charge of Senegal in 2001 and 2002.
“He has risen through the ranks and this is a just reward”, said Brice Ignegue – the president of the Gabonese national team’s fan club – told the AFP news agency.
Gaelle Enganamouit of Cameroon was named women’s player of the year.
Edwin Kumi Gyamfi taking the African Legend Award for his late father C.K. Gyamfi.
Aubameyang’s father was captain of Gabon and played professionally in France.
Aubameyang then was feted by thousands of fans who packed the Nzeng Ayong stadium where he showed off the player of the year trophy.
The playmaker’s fury is believed to be based on the fact he didn’t win despite playing nearly every minute of the Ivory Coast’s triumphant 2015 Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
“To be honest, I’m disappointed I lost out”.
The 32-year-old told radio station RFI: “I am very, very disappointed”. This is not the time to complain. “We have many tough African players around the world and it’s such a big challenge but I hope to be back in 2016”.
Aubameyang is the Bundesliga’s leading scorer so far this season, with 18 goals in 17 league games.
