Auburn remains second-highest ranked SEC team in College Football Playoff rankings
All without starting quarterback Wilton Speight who injured his non-throwing shoulder against Iowa two weeks ago. Regardless of what happens with other teams vying for a spot in the 2016 College Football Playoff, the Sooners must beat Oklahoma State on December 3 and win the Big 12 title to remain in the mix. And the Top Four remained unchanged.
It’s nearly certainly not going to be a flawless world. That would create the possibility of Ohio State sneaking into the playoff despite not making its own conference title game. At No. 4, Clemson also held onto the final playoff spot available.
Ask yourself this question, though. The regular season games still have one more week. Alabama and Clemson won handily last week, while Ohio State and Michigan defeated Michigan State and IN by one and 10 points, respectively. Ohio State, Michigan and Clemson have one loss each. We also have 1 team that has come back from the Brink of a sex scandal that could have ended the Football Program.
IN (5-6, 3-5 Big Ten) travels to Purdue (3-8, 1-7). Among the years listed is 2012, but not because of game results – that team finished second in its conference and wasn’t allowed to play in a bowl. However, I think that unless there’s an upset in the ACC or Pac-12, they’ll be left out. If they beat Utah on Saturday, the Buffs will advance to the December 2 Pac-12 championship game, where they would face the victor of Friday’s Washington-Washington State contest in Pullman.
Ohio State’s only loss was a close one on the road at PSU.
Behind the Utes, the Pac-12 has two consecutive representatives with Washington State at No. 23 and Stanford at No. 24. They will even have the SEC Championship game to improve on their ranking if they drop. In that scenario, OU would only need a loss from Washington or Clemson instead of needing both to lose. The Buckeyes would have a legitimate claim to that No. 4 spot. The Buckeyes will host MI this Saturday. With a win over Ohio State and next week in the Big Ten championship, the Wolverines will be playoff-bound.
Ohio State and MI play Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, and the loser is likely – though not definitely – out of the playoff race. From there, hope the Buckeyes win the Big Ten and bank on the same chaos.
All of this can become a moot point if Washington loses again. A pile of Pac-12 teams separate No. 25 Navy Midshipmenfrom the rest of the Group of 5 teams, as Utah, Washington State and Stanfordmake up Nos. Frankly, it is surprising that Ohio State didn’t fall a spot to No. 3.
Penn State, the current East Division leader in the Big Ten, moved to the No. 7 spot, and will be facing Michigan State in its final game. OU moved up after they beat West Virginia (down to No. 18) 56-28.
Ohio State felt as if it got some good news last week when College Football Playoff chairman Kirby Hocutt said that conference championships are one of four metrics used to separate two teams that are comparable.
