Audi and Porsche to co-develop V6 and V8 petrol engines
Tolerances built into the architecture of the new engines will allow them to be scaled in capacity, according to sources.
Audi and Porsche have reportedly begun working together on a new family of turbocharged V6 and V8 petrol engines.
The new engines created by the collaboration between the Volkswagen Group siblings will replace the existing V6 and V8 engines used by both Audi and Porsche. Each cylinder has a capacity of 500cc and this sums up with the V6 being a 3L unit and the V8 a 4L machine. Their initial design will feature gas-driven turbochargers, but later they will be re-engineered with electric turbochargers based on Audi’s recent experiments on its RS5 TDI Concept and TT Clubsport Turbo. And because the motors are being redesigned from the ground up, the same rumors imply the impending arrival of a new Atkinson-cycle 2.5L V6 for Audi’s new hybrid models.
The engines for Porsche and Audi cars have been quite different, until now and it will remain to see how the two German majors who rivals each other but fall under the same group differentiate with the same engines.
Given Audi’s and Volkswagen AG’s liberal use of Audi and Volkswagen mills in all of its portfolios, there’s little doubt to of potentially seeing these new V8s and V6s in future Bentley and possibly, even Lamborghini models.
