Audi bringing matrix ‘organic’ LED concept to Frankfurt
Aside from just unveiling future cars, the Audi is going to pull off an fantastic light show.
Audi loves new lighting technologies, and they’ve just debuted the next major product to come from their ‘Lighting Competence Center’ in Ingolstadt, a new version of its Matrix OLED lights. Layers are less than a thousandth of a mm thick. The colour is based on the molecular composition of the light source. Their light attains a new level of homogeneity, and its dimming is continuously variable. As increases in light density are made, the lights will be able to produce brake and turn signal lights. Details on what this teased vehicle will actually be are not known at the time so we will have to wait for the German automotive event to open its gates in order to find out.
Current prototypes utilize glass layers to encase organic material, but production technology will use plastic sheets. The company has already showcased multi-coloured OLEDs in the silhouette of the auto and “the swarm” with a three-dimensional OLED display.
In addition to saving energy and giving designers more freedom, OLED lights can also be separated into smaller segments that will emit different brightness levels. This makes OLED units highly efficient and lightweight. The automaker says OLED lights don’t require cooling systems like LED units and therefore can be used in innovative shapes and spaces.
