Audi launches most powerful S model to date
As a result, the performance limousine can shoot forward from rest to ton in a mere 3.8 seconds.
Audi is making a strong statement with the new S8 plus*.
It uses a lightweight, predominantly aluminium Audi Space Frame, which in isolation weighs about the same as a modern sports-tourer motorcycle at just 231kg.
Audi engineers have made extensive changes to reguar S8’s 4.0-litre TFSI V8 petrol engine to extract 85 PS of additional output.
The Mercedes-Benz S63 may have more power at 621 HP and 738 lb-ft of torque, but all that torque is routed through the rear wheels whereas Audi has its legendary Quattro up its sleeve.
The large vehicle can also sprint from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and there is a top speed of about 155mph.
Audi and Quattro GmbH bundled their expertise in engine development to attain these top figures. Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Chassis highlights include the S sports adaptive air suspension and dynamic steering, both of which have been tuned specifically for the S8 plus. In Germany, the auto comes with 21-inch wheels that were specially designed for the S8 plus and size 275/35 tires. Of course, the quoted top speed is electronically limited. It is modified by quattro GmbH and gives the S8 plus an unmistakable V8 sound.
It’s just as striking in visual terms, with a standard-fit boot-lid spoiler (available in carbon fibre or body colour) as well as carbon-fibre side air vents and front splitter. In addition, the tail lights will be stealthly blacked out as well as the gloss black grille.
The standard dual-branch sports exhaust system opens out into two oval high-gloss black tailpipes on the left and right. What’s more, the optional Dynamic package can make the S8 Plus even more Autobahn-friendly by removing its top speed limiter, allowing the range-topping S8 to hit 189 miles per hour instead of 155 miles per hour.
It features S8 logos at the front and rear and V8 T badges on the front fenders. A matt-effect paint finish in floret silver is exclusively available on the S8 plus. All of the colors offered on the S8 are also available on the S8 plus. They illuminate the road superbly without causing glare to oncoming traffic. Piping, also in Arras red, trims the comfort sport seats as well and emphasizes the stylish side of the sport sedan.
A contrasting red thread woven into the upper inlay can also be specified in favour of the carbon atlas inlays fitted as standard. The dashboard is also accented with brushed aluminum and black piano paint trim. Characteristic of the interior of the S models are the round instruments with grey dials and white needles and the stainless steel pedals.
The cabin also features a handful up upgrades.
