Aung San Suu Kyi’s Party Wins Myanmar Elections
But Ms Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy captured more than 85 per cent of seats declared so far from Sunday’s election and is looking forward to form the next government.
Suu Kyi has already publicly called for “national reconciliation talks” with president Thein Sein and army chief Min Aung Hlaing.
U Zaw Htay, director of the President’s Office, declined to comment on the president’s invitation to meet with parties on November 15.
The election commission announced at noon local time that Ms. Suu Kyi’s party had won 348 seats in the 664-seat legislature, with a few dozen more results still expected from remote areas in coming hours and days. Her children hold British passports.
However, NLD party co-founder Win Htein has said that if they win a majority government, there are plans to address the constitution.

It gave itself key powers in the constitution, including control of several powerful ministries and a quarter of the seats in both houses of parliament. The NLD picked up an additional 24 seats in the lower house, to gain a majority in the chamber.
However, the most powerful ministerial positions – home, defence and border affairs – will be reserved for Myanmar’s armed forces, or Tatmadaw.
He insisted there was no attempt to delay the declaration of results from Sunday’s election. Suu Kyi, the daughter of an independence leader, expressed concern last week about irregularities in advance voting, fraud and intimidation.
“This is in many ways it a momentous opportunity for the people of Burma”, Rhodes told reporters.
Suu Kyi’s party secured a landslide election victory Friday, propelling the country’s pro-democracy movement to power after a 25-year struggle.
The win represents a huge stride in Suu Kyi’s decades-long journey from political prisoner, held under house arrest by the former junta, to the heart of power.
Suu Kyi’s party said it received a message Wednesday from Information Minister Ye Htut on behalf of President Thein Sein congratulating it for leading the race for parliamentary seats.
Myanmar’s government has denied the Rohingya Muslims citizenship.
After the outcome of the parliamentary vote is decided, lawmakers will begin the complex process of choosing a president.
