“I’m glad that we are in”, said Day.
Just two months ago, Iwata shot a 10-under 62 in the second round of the Thailand Open.
Lingmerth said he was anxious enough that he planned to get some extra practice in before the third round.
Now if he could just feel better about his long game.
One look at the leaderboard at the name right behind him – Jordan Spieth – made it clear it won’t be easy. “But I’m going to have fun with it, and I’m pretty relaxed on the golf course“, he told the PGA Tour website.
Day recovered to birdie 17 and finish the day on 15-under-par.
The abundant sunshine and endless action Saturday might have been a preview for what could be a sensational end to the majors.
This was hardly a two-man race.
Still in the mix was Martin Kaymer, who had a 65 and was four shots behind.
Spieth figured he would be four or five shots behind going into the weekend, and that might be the case.
The 27-year-old can’t wait to face Spieth in the battle for the Wanamaker Trophy tomorrow morning – the two will tee off together as the final pair at 4.45am.
Day already has two wins this year and plenty of heartache in the majors. “He’s just full of confidence right now”.
Iwata, who racked up eight birdies, an eagle at the par-five 11th and a bogey, became the 25th player to shoot a 63 at a major as he finished at four under. In 2000, Woods was a fast-closing fifth in the Masters, then won the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA.

The Beaudesert product offered confident and upbeat answers to everything the hungry press pack threw at him after shooting a marvellous 66 today, Spieth shooting the lights out with a seven-under 65.
Nick Taylor, of Abbotsford, B.C., is the only Canadian left in the field and is tied for 75th.
