Aussie men in Olympic sevens heaven
The Telecom Fijiana are now just one step away from qualifying to the Rio Olympics after booking its spot in the Oceania 7’s final.
The Tongans had upset World Sevens Series regulars Samoa 41-5 to make the final, but were unable to contest in the tackle or at the breakdown with the same ferocity as they had against their fellow Pacific Islanders.
The Aussie team won the Oceania Sevens tournament on Sunday afternoon in Auckland – which was doubling as the Oceania Regional Olympic qualifier – defeating surprise finalist Tonga 50-0.
The trans-Tasman neighbours will be joined by Fiji in Rio after Rusila Nagasau scored four tries in a 55-0 rout over Samoa in the women’s final.
Thunderbolts veteran James Stannard said his world No.5-ranked team was confident but wouldn’t be taking the Tongans lightly as they aim to lock in an Olympic berth.
“The fashion in which they qualified was awesome”, Walsh told AAP.
“We’ve been pretty clinical in all our games but the next one is the one that counts”.
Victorian-raised teenager Henry Hutchison continued his eye-catching form in his global tournament debut as Australia dominated PNG in a one-sided semi-final – jumping to 24-0 at halftime.
In Sunday’s quarterfinals, Samoa will play Nauru and Australia will face American Samoa.
Both the New Zealand and Australian women’s teams qualified for Rio via this year’s World Series.
