Aussies wrap up Test series at the MCG
Smith remained 70 not out when he made the declaration at the start of the fourth day and finished 2015 with most Test runs of 1,474 at 73.70.
It was the first time that four Australian batsmen scored tons in a single Test innings in Australia.
He added: “I back myself to get wickets whenever I come on, I don’t necessarily bowl a lot so I just want to keep working at it and keep improving as a bowler”.
“There’s a little bit of up and down and the odd ball is seaming a little bit, so there’s always enough in there”, he said on Monday. “If I get an opportunity to get in and score runs, then I am trying to go as big as possible and stay hungry”.
West Indies captain Jason Holder hoped his bowlers could exploit moisture in the surface from rain that delayed the start of play by an hour. Only David Warner missed out with 23.
But despite their dire position the Windies showed more resolve against the odds on the third day.
The skipper was also buoyed by the positive debut of paceman Carlos Brathwaite, who scored a 59 in the first innings and showed good control if not pace with his bowling.
That prompted another West Indies slide.
“I’ll enjoy this moment”, Khawaja said. “It’s a war between bat and ball and West Indies and Australia. Something I will hold dear to my heart every second I’m out there with that maroon cap on”.
Mitchell Marsh claimed the key wickets of Denesh Ramdin and Jason Holder as Australia wrapped up a 177-run victory in the second Test against West Indies with a day to spare.
Bravo fell short of his second century for the series, reaching 81 before being caught by Smith at gully off Pattinson’s bowling right on the tea break.
While Holder was expressive, Ramdin played carefully but punished loose balls as he hit eight boundaries.
The West Indies have yet to pass 300 in seven Test innings against Australia this year.
It was only on the stroke of lunch that the hosts were able to strike, Nathan Lyon coaxing a return catch from Brathwaite while working around the wicket.
James Pattinson (5-72), who appeared to dismiss Brathwaite twice in the morning session only to have both deliveries called for no balls, broke through with the new ball after lunch by trapping Kemar Roach lbw for 22 with fullish delivery.
