Austin Davis Gets Start At QB For Browns Over Manziel
“I’m not ready to announce that”, Pettine said on a conference call.
McCown started Monday’s game because Manziel, who had been named the team’s starter for the rest of the season, was sent back to the bench and relegated to No. 3 quarterback against the Ravens. Starting quarterback Josh McCown, who missed the two previous games with a rib injury, was knocked out with a collarbone injury in the fourth quarter.
Pettine says Davis “took advantage of his opportunity on Monday night”. But in a worst-case scenario, players sometimes get to that point.
On one dramatic, unforgettable play, the two Ravens achieved their goals. “I’m going to reserve talk for the quarterback stuff until [Wednesday]”. Austin is the guy for this week.
Regardless of who he was in St. Louis, Austin Davis could prove to be a much tougher opponent for Cincinnati than Manziel, as there is less tape on Davis from 2015 and uncertainty of how Cleveland will construct its offensive scheme against the Bengals. The 22-year-old 2012 Heisman Trophy victor has given no indication he wants out of Cleveland. He completed seven of 10 passes, one of which was a 42-yard touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin to tie the score, 27-27.
Urban’s block of the Browns last-second field goal attempt led to Will Hill taking the football to the house. Unless the Browns ignore the performance by Austin Davis or throw Pryor into the fire, it’s Manziel’s turn. And he did it after hearing some Browns fans chant “John-ny, John-ny”, hoping Pettine would free Manziel from his doghouse.
Davis said the fear of failure drives him.
There was no NFL football in Cleveland from 1996-98 because former team owner Art Modell moved his franchise to Baltimore in 1996. That’s where just the hard work and prep comes from.
Davis will be the Browns’ third starting quarterback this season.
McCown re-entered the game as soon as the Browns got the ball back, but he ultimately couldn’t continue.
In typical fashion, McCown, 36, downplayed the physical toll taken on his body. “I don’t think it will be an issue for the other guys in the huddle”. But he just might be in line to get another chance to earn his teammates trust in a game situation. “It hurts more than any of the physical things”.
The team also signed Terrelle Pryor yesterday, though it appears they want him to be a wideout and not a QB.
“I’m not really too anxious about getting fined, I thought those refs (stunk)”, 49ers left guard Alex Boone said in the locker room Sunday.
