Australia vs West Indies 1st Test 2015
Forging an unbeaten 136-run partnership with Marsh for the fourth wicket, Voges continued his dream run against West Indies, after his unbeaten 130 on his Test debut at age 35 against them in Dominica last June.
“Australia is strong, but when we go to places like Sri Lanka, India and the West Indies that’s when you start to see those numbers drop off”, he added.
He urged Holder to bowl first if he won the toss at Hobart on Thursday because the West Indies would find it “impossible” to make enough first innings runs to pressure the hotly favoured home side.
Voges also registered Australia’s highest score against the West Indies, eclipsing Doug Walters’ 242 in 1969.
“It’s been a great day”, said Voges.
“We were in a good position just before lunch”. Voges was unbeaten on 174 while Marsh reached 139 not out.
Earlier Adam Voges and Shaun Marsh produced the highest Test partnership in this country and broke a host of other batting records.
“I worked truly hard over the last number of days on my prep work and I felt really confident entering the video game”, he said.
SHAUN MARSH: “I definitely feel comfortable at this level. Vogesy batted really well and got me going and I’m really happy that we both got hundreds”.
Warner scored his 20th test half century off 40 balls with 10 fours and looked to be cruising towards the break on 64 when he nudged a Jomel Warrican delivery into the gloves of West Indies wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.
Play came to a close with Voges just 26 runs shy of that landmark, while Marsh needs only 10 more to surpass his previous highest score. “If we can get them out early for not too many runs, I still believe that the middle order of Australia is not that solid at the moment”, Ambrose pointed out. The Tasmanian public are being judged on Test matches against lower-ranked teams.
Marsh was out just before lunch, caught in the deep by Darren Bravo off the bowling of left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican (3-158).
The Australians for their part are wary of the nothing-to-lose attitude of the West Indies.
Speaking after the first day’s play, Warrican said the Voges-Marsh partnership hampered their bowling attack. Jerome Taylor has been leading the attack very well, he’s in good form, one of the fastest bowlers in the world Shannon Gabriel, and then myself.
Gabriel left the field with ankle trouble and will be additional evaluated overnight, a team representative said.
Steve Smith’s team are hot favourites to win the three-Test series in dominant style against the tourists.
Lyon snared the wickets of Marlon Samuels and Jermaine Blackwood in his seventh over nearing tea to undo a steady start to the West Indies run chase after Australia’s formidable 583 for four declared.
