Australian Open golf: Final round Matt Jones, Rod Pampling
Matthew Jones of Australia holds the Stone Haven Cup after winning the Australian Open golf tournament in Sydney Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015.
Flying under the radar no more, Matt Jones is eyeing major championship glory after taking down world No. 1 Jordan Spieth to win the 100th Australian Open in a riveting climax.
When Jones also made a horror triple-bogey at the ninth after recovering birdies at four and six, it allowed Pampling to briefy share the lead in the clubhouse.
The Australian was three over for his round after two holes, a bogey on the first immediately followed by a double at the first par three. “‘It was hard-going out there today windy the pins were tucked but I made some putts” Scott said.
Culllen mixed five birdies and four bogeys in his final round 68 but an eagle on the par five 14th hole helped him move to three-under-par for the championship.
In all, there were 10 players within five shots of the lead early in the final round, setting up a possible grandstand finish at The Australian Golf Club.
Pampling’s stunning score bettered the 63 Spieth carded to win the title a year ago, a final round that had given the American high hopes he could overhaul Jones’s overnight lead.
Australian veteran Rod Pampling shot the round of his career on Sunday to break Jordan Spieth’s course record at The Australian Golf Club with a 10-under 61 during the final round of the Australian Open.
Jones and Spieth will do their best Sunday to make sure Scott isn’t around at the end. “But either way it’s a lot better than it was through the first four holes”.
This year, Pampling finished in fourth place with a six-under 278, but he has qualified for the British Open at Royal Troon in July next year for being among the top three finishers who were not already exempt. You can be one swing away from doing what I did and having no chance to win.
“On the weekend you’d like to start off your rounds and be able to gain some momentum and I just didn’t get anything at the beginning, ” he said.
“So I am going to give it everything I can as I would love to have my name on that trophy alongside the likes of (Jack) Nicklaus and Norman”. I would have been pretty excited to be in the play off with him, it would have just added to it, ” said Spieth.
