Australian Open: Marin Čilić Advances to Finals!
“I don’t know if we keep playing on these very, very hard surfaces what’s going to happen in the future with our lives”.
Nadal said he wanted the ATP to investigate the spate of injuries suffered by top players. Other players have expressed similar views.
After winning the United States Open with Goran Ivanisevic as his coach and reaching the Wimbledon final with Jonas Bjorkman, Cilic is working this year with Ivan Cinkus, a fellow Croat with whom he said he shared a seamless connection. Venus Williams lost in the first round.
Now, she will face Caroline Wozniacki, a straight-set victor over Elise Mertens, with both women looking for a first major title.
It was a match too far for 23-year-old Edmund, who upset world No.3 Grigor Dimitrov and world No.11 Kevin Anderson on the way to his first Grand Slam semi-final, but had little left in the tank.
The second-ranked Federer is still in contention for his 20th major, with a quarterfinal against Tomas Berdych on Wednesday.
Though odds makers expect a Federer vs Cilic final on Sunday, the veteran Croatian is not ready to underestimate Chung. In response, Edmund elected to serve wide at every opportunity, which played into Cilic’s hands.
His angry discussion with the match officials initially appeared to give him the energy burst he needed as he managed to force the set into a tiebreaker but Cilic’s quality shone through as he went on to win 7-4. The Brit crashed out of the tournament with a 6-2 7-6 6-2 defeat today, in front of a packed Rod Laver Arena.
“I noticed in the third game of the third set that he let a couple of balls go”, Cilic said. In Cilic’s case, he has shown that he still has the pedigree of a Grand Slam champion, and is ready to add a second Grand Slam to his name in Melbourne.
“I love the way Shapovalov plays”, said Lloyd. “I was seeing with this movement he was a little bit restricted so I just tried to move the ball around”.
According to ESPN, the injury represents a minor risk, but it did stop Nadal from pursuing a second title bid at the Australian Open.
Those chances would’ve shortened when Cilic broke early in the third and throughout the stanza he was all over the Edmund serve. Somewhere along the fourth set, Nadal’s right hip muscle caved which eventually forced him to call it a day. “People sometimes say he is introverted off the court, but behind the quietness there is a hell of lot of steel”. “He’s still raw but I think he’ll win a Slam within three years”.
Told of Nadal’s comments, Cilic responded: “Just in this previous year, obviously (the) beginning of this one, we see a lot of top guys that are injured”.
