Australian tennis player Tomic arrested in Miami Beach over loud hotel music
The Associated Press reported that following a third-round loss to eventual Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic two weeks ago, Tomic was suspended from Australia’s home Davis Cup quarterfinal against Kazakhstan after he criticized his country’s tennis officials.
As the top-ranked Australian player, irrespective of all differences between Tomic and the Australian tennis administrators, the decision was indeed a little high-handed and harsh.
After the Aussie’s party at the W South Beach hotel in Miami caused a disturbance, Tomic was arrested as he refused to leave the premises after complaints from other patrons, according to TMZ.
The Miami Beach Police account of the arrest said he “pointed his finger aggressively towards hotel security”.
He was eventually released on $2,000 bail.
Witnesses said Tomic closed the door on the guards on all three occasions that they knocked, and refused to lower the music.
When police officers showed up at Tomic’s door to evict him, they told him several times that he would be arrested if he didn’t leave. Remaining guests in the room left and the def wilfully remained in the room refusing to comply.
It comes after Tomic’s first round exit from the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Rhode Island, by fellow Aussie John-Patrick Smith on Monday.
