Authorities capture 2 who escaped Houston detention center
Authorities have recaptured a 16-year-old capital murder suspect and another juvenile who escaped from a Houston detention center over the weekend after beating a guard.
The U.S. Marshals Office isn’t saying which two were caught by the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force.
A third inmate, 16-year-old Jahrell West, remained at large.
Details of the capture were not immediately available.
Authorities say Coby escaped when the guard opened his cell to provide toiletries the teenager requested. Coby then assaulted the guard, took his keyes and let the other two juveniles out of the cell.
Brooks said that West and Coby had been “certified” as adults for the pending criminal charges against them, though it was unclear Monday if Harper had also been declared an adult. He was certified as an adult in court last month. “They are going to slip up”. For decades before that, it was a jail for adults. “I have no reason to believe there was any collaboration in this”.
Surveillance video is being reviewed, as are visitation and phone records, he said. A guard was overpowered and beaten during the escape.
This is the first escape that the facility has seen in its nine years of operation-something that Longoria said spoke to the teens’ sophistication.
“Human error is an unfortunate thing; something you can learn from, but an expensive lesson”, he said. They are considered highly unsafe.
