Authorities Decline to Release Dashcam Video in Teen’s Death
Nineteen-year-old Zachary Hammond was killed July 26, in a Hardee’s parking lot.
He was on a first date with Tori Morton, 23, who ate ice cream alongside of him at the time he was shot.
“The letter goes on to state, “…a police officer with a neighboring police force has confirmed to SLED that the Seneca Police Department celebrated the killing of Zachary by desecrating his corpse.
The officer then reportedly returned to Hammond’s physique, rolled it on the aspect, positioned the thing underneath his physique, after which rolled it again.
Although the Justice Department noted that their investigation would run parallel with the SLED investigation, they would not provide further commentary on the investigation.
A police lieutenant said he shot Zachary Hammond because he felt threatened as the teen drove up, the AP said.
Logan urged the voters of Seneca to show their disgust with the way the police department has handled this case at the polls.
Berry said the video is exempt from disclosure under the section of open records law that exempts “the premature release of information to be used in a prospective law enforcement action” and would harm the agency “by endangering the life, health or property of any person”. “He fired two shots in self-defense, which unfortunately were fatal for the suspect”, said Chief Covington back in July.
Attorney Bland also says a private autopsy on the body ordered by the family showed the teen was shot in the back and the auto was not moving.
“On behalf of the citizens of South Carolina, we demand that the truth come out and that the truth be known”, he said.
The shooting took place in the course of what police have described as a drug operation.
Covington claimed Tiller was part of a sting to arrest Hammond’s date for selling drugs. He’s my son. Somebody has to answer. “And why that officer decided to take his life”. It’s a struggle right now, every day, just not knowing’.
Eric Bland, the family’s lawyer, said Sunday the unarmed teenager posed no public risk “other than a possible minor possession of marijuana” when he was shot in a restaurant parking lot, and called the shooting “ridiculous”.
As the incident has gained more attention, the police have since stopped commenting on the matter. “The media and our government officials have treated the death of an unarmed white teenager differently than they would have if this were a death of an unarmed Black teen”, he told the Washington Post.
An autopsy conducted by the Oconee County Coroner’s Office did not specify from which direction the bullets hit Hammond’s body.
