Authorities expect to find more bodies in rubble
A newly installed pedestrian bridge over a major road in Miami on a college campus collapsed Thursday, trapping at least eight cars below and leaving “multiple victims”, local officials said.
Nine people have been transported to local trauma centers with injuries, two of whom are in critical condition.
Authorities confirm at least six people have been killed, after a bridge came crashing down onto a highway in Miami on Thursday.
“There is the sad possibility that under the concrete there may be additional vehicles”, Alvaro Zabaleta, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade Police Department, said at a news conference Friday.
Miami-Dade police director Juan Perez praised the actions of first responders during a news conference but acknowledged the likelihood of finding more victims under the rubble was growing more hard with the passage of time.
“They’ve found this to be very economical, very safe, and a significant amount of time being saved by using this new technology”, said Rosenker. “The engineers are working at it in a very tactical way”.
Carrasco, the student, said she saw at least five or six cars completely crushed beneath the bridge.
Downey said “search and rescue mode” would continue after nightfall, with technical rescue crews and K-9 teams sifting through the rubble. “Pray for the family members that have lost loved ones”.
The other part of United Bridge Partners’ pitch to the commission includes the construction of the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge in Virginia.
Foringer said the state’s Rapid Bridge Replacement Project, RBRP, is another example of accelerated bridge construction techniques, though different from the bigger bridges the state has done.

In a press release Saturday about the bridge’s installation, the university reported workers lifted the main span of the bridge from temporary supports, rotated it 90 degrees across the highway and lowered it into its permanent position. The idea was to safeguard the FIU community, and complete the project with minimal disruption to traffic.
