Authorities identify man hit, killed by off-duty officer
Police have identified the man who was killed when an off-duty New York City police officer’s SUV struck four pedestrians in Brooklyn over the weekend.
“What I can tell you is he is a great guy”.
The Daily News also reported that Batka’s Facebook page is littered with photos in which the cop is boasting about his drinking abilities. “He was just an outstanding person”.
“He went out of his way to help people”, Weidemier said. He was involved in community service.
Witnesses to the crash at Bedford Avenue near North Eighth Street in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood said Batka slipped into the passenger’s seat after the crash and tried to flee, according to the New York Daily News and New York Daily Post. The officer’s vehicle severed one of the students’ legs and impaled another victim on a fence, finally crashing into a utility pole on the driver’s side. Sophia Tabchouri, a current student, and James Balchunas, a 2014 graduate, as well as another young woman, were seriously injured.
Three of the victims – a 21-year-old male, a 23-year-old female, and a 22-year-old male – were taken to Bellevue Hospital.
“He added that his son, who had recently started working for Google, would have to undergo “‘multiple surgeries’ to fix his mangled right leg and a shattered wrist”. “Batka refused to take a Breathalyzer, but a blood sample was obtained when he was brought to Weill Cornell for an examination”. “It was a good day”.
He was subsequently arrested and charged with manslaughter, assault, and driving while intoxicated, among other charges.
Barnhart, who said the university waited to write publicly until after they could contact Esquivel’s family, acknowledged his accomplishments as a student, as a member of the wrestling club, and as a participant in the UROP program.
He has been released on $300,000 bail, the DA said Sunday.
