Authorities Say Five Students Injured In Fire At Virginia High School
At least five students were rushed to the hospital after a fire broke out in a high school chemistry classroom outside Washington, DC, according to officials there.
Two students were airlifted to a Washington burn treatment center with life-threatening injuries, Shaw said.
Five students were injured and taken to local hospitals.
The teacher was treated by medics at the scene.
According to officials, the fire started in one of the school’s chemistry labs around 9:30 a.m., and the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department was notified by a 911 call at 9:40 a.m., according to Fire Chief Richard Bowers.
The cause of the fire was unclear. In a posting on the school’s website, officials said the fire was in a chemistry classroom and the school was evacuated.
“It was a science laboratory, a classroom”, Dan Schmidt, of Fairfax County Fire, told the station.
A hazmat team is now onsite and we have not yet been cleared to return to the building. He said they haven’t been told when they’ll be let off the bus.
The school announced it is dismissing early for the day, at 12:55 p.m.
W.T. Woodson High School was quickly evacuated and all students who were not impacted by the fire are safe.
Torre didn’t know what grade the injured students are in. The school is a part of Fairfax County Public Schools.
