Authorities want to question Mexican actress about ‘El Chapo’
Mexico has claimed that Penn’s secret meeting with Guzman was crucial to the recapture of the drug kingpin.
But he also said he presumed Mexican authorities understood about the arrangements being made through Mexican performer Kate del Castillo for him to meet the drug lord.
The photo was tweeted out by Mexican journalist Carlos Loret de Mola of the Mexican newspaper El Universal, granted entry into the Altiplano prison where “El Chapo” is now behind bars.
In an appearance Sunday on “60 Minutes”, Sean Penn defended his interview with Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
They argue that their client, Joaquin Guzmán Loera, wouldn’t receive a fair trial in the USA because of a hostile environment toward Mexicans. He was then asked whether he believed Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto’s government had deliberately sought to credit him with Guzman’s capture to put him at risk from the Sinaloa Cartel.
Before the interview came to light, two USA law enforcement officials had said the tracking of cell phones and electronic exchanges of people close to Guzman led to his recapture.
“There’s a growing fear (among Guzman’s lawyers) that something may happen to him, because it’s suspicious that they won’t even let his defense attorneys look at him, ask him how he’s feeling, what he’s been through, whether he’s been tortured”, he said.
With that simple insight into one of the most powerful – and now re-captured – drug entrepreneurs globally, it’s a curious thing that Sean Penn can say, “My article failed”. “We’re not smarter than the DEA or the Mexican intelligence”. But Mexico’s attorney general said he and del Castillo were “essential” in this capture.
He added, “I’m really sad about the state of journalism in our country”.
“As someone who has researched and written about the Mexican cartels and the futile “war on drugs” for coming on twenty years, I know how tough a subject it is”, Winslow writes. “They’re affecting us. So like a marriage, you know, you might want a divorce”. And if you are in the moral right, or on the far left, just as many of your children are doing these drugs…And how much time have they spent in the last week since this article [has] come out, talking about that? He fumed that he wants to see the license that makes them (us?) journalists.
“We all want this drug problem to stop”, he said.
