Ava DuVernay isn’t interested in directing a Star Wars movie
And when they then shared in 2016 that Ava DuVernay was directing – the first Black woman to ever direct a $100 million movie – I nerded out doubletime.
Hair is still an issue for Meg in director Ava DuVernay’s new screen adaptation of A Wrinkle In Time, but the insecurity she feels about her curls is political as well as personal. It looked wonderful, diverse, powerful, unique and trippy. I make films to express myself.
Black Panther kept up its record-setting ways in North American theaters over the weekend, easily defeating a challenge from another Disney product, newly released “A Wrinkle in Time”, to again dominate box offices, industry analysts said. They are the film and that can only carry things so far. A Wrinkle in Time is about love, but it presents the emotion as something much bigger than romance and idealized relationships, instead focusing on self-worth and the love of one’s own faults as well as virtues. But it was the casting of Reid as Murry that truly got me obsessed with what this could mean not just for me as a book lover, but moviegoers everywhere.
“I almost lost my father, and it nearly broke me in half”, he recalled. Who (Mindy Kaling). Later on, while relaxing in Meg’s backyard, they are visited by Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Transferring them across dimensions, Meg, Charles Wallace and Calvin explore different worlds and universes and expand their minds in order to find Meg’s father at the edge of the universe. He spent the rest of the ode showing his appreciation for A Wrinkle in Time.
However, the film itself can also be reviewed on two different levels: how it performs as a film for children and how it performs as a film for adults. Regardless of what you think about the film, this is a message that can only do good for its young viewers.
Dave Hollis, president of worldwide distribution for Disney, told Variety that Black Panther and A Wrinkle in Time accounted for inclusion through their portrayals of strong female and minority characters. Be uniquely you, take a child to see A Wrinkle in time when it opens in theaters nationwide on March 9th to tap into YOUR inner child. It is most definitely not bad but, for a film where many fantastic things happen, it is seriously lacking in magic.
She has had bit roles in television (NCIS: Los Angeles, Chicago P.D.) and film (12 Years a Slave, Sleight), but nothing even close to something such as A Wrinkle in Time. There’s no word on the film’s production budget, but unless it was made for a couple million dollars, it won’t make it out of this sticky situation. However, given the success of Black Panther and numerous studio’s other movies over the past year, even if A Wrinkle in Time doesn’t meet financial expectations, it won’t be a major loss for the studio. In watching the film, there were feelings of curiosity, sympathy and enjoyment. Pine is wonderful as the reckless but inspirational dad Dr. Murry, and McCabe is a breakout star, stealing the film from his co-stars as the odd little brother. It’s not a particularly strong performance from Reid, but she’s not awful.
Perhaps the most obvious, and widely discussed, innovation by Ms. DuVernay concerns the race of the main characters.
After an initial stay on the ravishing planet Uriel, and a visit to the Happy Medium (a comic Zach Galifianakis, clad, as he notes, in earth tones), the kids end up on the frightening planet of Camazotz, ruled by the dark force called It. It’s a push and pull situation that’s mostly successful. (When Meg sees an idealized version of herself, in which she represents a more stereotypical, European style before ridding herself of that specific demon, is visually grim as well as thematically mature.) It’s when the concern is more about how to get from point A to point B in the plot, and not the journey that happens in between, that the entirety of the story suffers.
DuVernay’s update of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic book was hotly anticipated. I didn’t expect a whole lot from it.
And with that, the film feels very targeted at children.
If you need us, we will be sobbing over this attractive friendship.
We shouldn’t be too anxious about Sandy and Dennys missing from the A Wrinkle in Time movie.
