‘Avatar’ Sequel Won’t Be Ready for 2018, James Cameron Says
James Cameron is now at work on four – yes, four – sequels to Avatar, with the first sequel schedule for release next December.
In November 2016, Fox dated an untitled film from James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment for December 21, 2018. When it was finally announced that filming would begin for the sequel later this summer there were also announcements of a planned 2018 release date.
‘The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern. So we’re not making ‘Avatar 2.’ We’re making ‘Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5.’ It’s an epic undertaking. “It’s not unlike building the Three Gorges dam”, he continued. Avatar is the all-time global box-office champion in absolute dollars, having drawn $2.788B after its 2009 debut. And there are two “experiences” (a.k.a. rides) you can board: “You can soar on the back of a mountain banshee”, Goldberg described, adding, “or you can travel on the Navi River Journey”. “This is my day job and pretty soon we’ll be 24/7”, said Cameron. It’s pretty exciting stuff. Or, like most of us, does every bit of news make you go, “Oh, right, they’re still doing that?”
Earlier Thursday morning, Paula Faris of “Good Morning America” introduced viewers to major elements of Pandora alongside Joe Rohde, a Walt Disney Imagineering veteran, and Jon Landau, producer of “Avatar”.
In theory, that means once Avatar 2 hits, Avatars 3 through 5 shouldn’t be far behind.
“We have a mixture of Earth plants, and then we have the exotic Pandora foliage that sculpted by sculptors and so on”, Cameron said.
Seeing as there are a whopping four more Avatar films on the way, this new section of Disney World’s Animal Kingdom is only going to get bigger and better too. The bioluminescent forest was actually from a dream that he had when he was just seventeen.
It’s worth keeping in mind that the first film was a huge technological feat, one that used extensive motion capture technology and helped bring 3D films mainstream.
