Gasoline prices around Arizona have fallen slightly at the pumps this week, but still are above the national average.
“That’s exactly what we are seeing”, nationally and in the region, Laskoski said.
The average national price per gallon of regular gasoline is now $2.65, down about 85 cents a gallon compared with last year at this time, according to AAA, the auto club.
But lower prices could be found, including what looked like an old school price war between a Speedway and Wawa on Route 9 in Woodbridge last week with princes ranging between $2.35 and $2.36 respectively. Chelsea Pompeani of AAA says normally it’s more likely to see prices rise in the summer.
If refineries continue producing at full capacity, the switch over to winter-blend gas – which is cheaper to produce and lower in demand – in the late fall should bring motorists good news.
As of Monday, those refinery issues had yet to be resolved, said Will Speer, a Texas-based GasBuddy analyst.
This, GasBuddy petroleum expert Allison Mac told the Desert Sun, is part of the slow return to lower prices after a “perfect storm” of factors that caused prices to spike close to $4.20 a gallon.
Those are national prices, he said; Louisiana pump prices generally run substantially lower than national prices – 27 cents this month.
Gas prices, along with food costs, play a big role in consumer confidence, Swenson, the ISU economist, said. Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts are not among them. Domestic oil supplies are 25 percent higher than last year with U.S. oil production up about 12 percent year-to-year, according to Energy Information Administration numbers, AAA officials said.
So, don’t be bummed that we’re heading into the final months of summer.
