NASCAR Truck driver Cole Custer might have been denied a a win, but he will at least be able to find a little solace in collecting his vanquisher with a crunching tackle post race.
After the race Custer ran after Nemechek, who was waiting on the track during an official review, and tackled him.
In an interview Tuesday on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, executive vice president and chief racing development officer Steve O’Donnell described Nemechek’s actions as aggressive, but reminded listeners auto racing is a contact sport.
A furious Custer told Motorsport.com afterwards: “He hit me coming to the second to the last corner – then hit me again and that sent me into the grass and he just drove me up into the fence”.
Custer took the lead back on a late race re-start and staved off Nemechek two more times before the final lap in overtime. He nudged Custer at first, but the slight contact wasn’t enough to derail the No. 00 truck enough to give Nemechek a passing opportunity.
It’s going to be a rough year for him.
If I had been in the same spot, he would have done the same thing to get a win. “We’ve always said that NASCAR is a contact sport and when drivers are racing, we expect that there could be contact. Rubbin’ is racin'”, Nemechek said. You have to do everything you can here to get a win.
After, Nemechek said he raced Custer clean to the finish.
Custer added he’s not looking for payback but will drive aggressively around him. Nemechek inched ahead at the finish to claim his second victory of the season. Custer is also to far behind in points to make the playoffs without a victory.
After a harrowing night in cable cars suspended in the shadow of Europe’s highest mountain, dozens of people, including three children were rescued Friday morning – ending an 18-hour ordeal.
According to CNN, the cable cars stopped unexpectedly around 4:30 p.m. local time when the cables crossed over each other on Thursday between Aiguille du Midi in France and Pointe Helbronner in Italy.
“The 33 tourists had to endure not just the fear of being hundreds of meters off the ground but also temperatures close to freezing”, the French news site wrote.
Italian and French authorities are helping with the rescue but it was not yet clear why the cable auto stopped working.
Rescuers only managed to evacuate 50 of them by helicopter before clouds began to hinder their efforts.
As fog descended and darkness started to fall on Thursday evening, authorities called off the helicopter rescue and switched to plan B, Fournier said.
French interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve said: “The rescuers are engaged in a delicate operation to rescue 110 people trapped following a technical incident”.
More than 110 people were initially trapped on the 5 km (3 mile) ride between two mountain peaks at an altitude of over 3,000 metres (9,840 feet) when three cables snared.
The top official in the Haute-Savoie region, Mr Georges- François Leclerc, said rescuers had been forced to halt their operation at 8.45pm on Thursday as they could not “guarantee the safety of the pilots, rescuers and the people stuck in the cars”.
He said the remaining passengers could now be rescued without the use of helicopters.
“But then we got by”.
Each cabin carries four passengers, and the 5km ride is normally meant to take 30 to 35 minutes. “They were given special survival kits including energy bars and emergency blankets”.
The terraces of Aiguille du Midi, which is nearly 12,400 feet high, offer a 360-degree view of the French, Swiss and Italian Alps.
NPR reports officials think strong winds might have caused the cable issue.
Chief of the cable vehicle company, Mathieu Dechavanne said at around 8am local time (6am GMT): “It restarted five minutes ago, the last cable (which was blocking the system) was untangled”.
