Awards for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants are Announced
The restaurant’s three Michelin stars (the top rank in the Michelin guide) also awards it a unique position, making it a place no foodie can afford to miss.
The restaurant in Modena, Italy, which was runner-up on last year’s list, switched the top spot with the 2015 victor El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain. In an awards ceremony on Monday in New York City, Restaurant Andre took the No 32 spot becoming Singapore’s best performer on the lauded The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016 list. David Thompson’s Bangkok restaurant, Nahm, slipped to 37th from 22nd.
“The chef’s ambitious creations perfectly balance the demands of honoring heritage while embracing modernity”, the awards board said in a statement explaining its decision.
The list is created from the votes of nearly 1,000 global leaders in the restaurant community, made up of food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs and highly regarded “gastronomes”.
Among U.S. restaurants, Eleven Madison Park earned the highest ranking on the list, claiming the No. 3 spot, and the New York City landmark restaurant also garnered The Ferrari Trento Art of Hospitality Award. Both of Thomas Keller’s top restaurants, Per Se and The French Laundry, were knocked off the Top 50 list, coming in at numbers 52 and 85, respectively.
Central in Lima, Peru held at No. 4 for a second year. Alinea ranked as high as #6 in 2011, and ranked #7 in 2010 and 2012.
The 2016 list included restaurants in 23 countries on six continents – but half were in Europe.
The four time victor of World’s 50 Best Restaurants – Denmark’s Noma – fell to the fifth spot this year, which also happens to be the restaurant’s last year of service as it will be relocating to a new site with a new concept. Asia and the United States each had six in the top 50, while South America and Scandinavia each had five. But, Gaggan is still among the seven Asian restaurants that made it to the prestigious list this year, beaten in score by World No. 8 Narisawa in Tokyo and World No. 20 Amber in Hong Kong.
With this ranking in place, Osteria Francescana isn’t just the best in the world.
This year was the 15th annual awards and is set to kick off what organizer’s are calling a “world tour” of World’s 50 Best.
