Aybar traded from Braves to Tigers for minor league catcher
The Atlanta Braves will call up top prospect Dansby Swanson from Double-A MS, the club announced Tuesday.
Detroit gets 32-year-old infielder Erick Aybar in exchange for utility man Mike Aviles and minor-league catcher Kade Scivique.
Detroit recently lost Jose Iglesias to a hamstring injury and has been using Dixon Machado and Andrew Romine at shortstop.
Atlanta was expected to let Aybar leave as a free agent after the season.
The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Swanson out of Vanderbilt with the No. 1 pick in the 2015 Major League Baseball draft.
The Braves acquired Swanson as part of a return package in the offseason trade that sent pitcher Shelby Miller to Arizona.
In return, the Braves received veteran infielder Mike Aviles to round the roster out for the rest of the season (he is now also on a one-year deal).
Aviles, 35 is batting.210 this season with one home run and six RBI. Scivicque, 23, was hitting.282 with 19 doubles and six homers in 105 games with Single A Lakeland. Before acquiring Scivicque, the Braves had no significant catching prospects in their minor league system.
The Tigers also called up outfielder Steven Moya from Toledo for the game Tuesday.
