AZ State Rep Calls For Constitutional Convention On Cruz’s Birth Issue
New Yorkers have taken aim at Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz, who spoke disparagingly of “New York values” at a debate this week.
Cruz criticized what he calls “New York values” in an attempt to distinguish himself from his Republican opponent Donald Trump, who was born in Queens, by saying the real estate mogul “embodies NY values”.
With just two weeks left until the Iowa caucuses, Donald Trump is escalating his attacks on rival Ted Cruz, whose popularity in the early nominating state now eclipses the billionaire’s support, according to recent polls.
“Ted Cruz insulted the people of NY and by the way (it was) blatantly hypocritical on his part”, he said on CNN.
Cruz’s attack sparked outrage in NY, where the front page of the Daily News illustrated the Statue of Liberty with a single finger artfully extended alongside the headline: “DROP DEAD, TED”.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, both Democrats, demanded an apology.
In addition to eligibility questions, Cruz has faced scrutiny over a New York Times report that he had failed to disclose in Federal Ethics Commission filings nearly $1 million in loans from Citibank and Goldman Sachs, where his wife works.
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley fired the opening salvo against Mr Trump in her response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address on Tuesday. “He has come here plenty of times to gain money for his campaign from people in NY”. “The people in NY fought and fought and fought, and we saw more death, and even the smell of death”.
Indeed, his view of “New York values” echoed their own past words. Trump responded aggressively (what else would you expect?), pointing to New York City’s resilience following the September 11th attacks.
He noted that “New Yorkers may go about things differently” but their values are the same as the rest of America.
The crowd in SC booed loudly as he made it, and he admitted he was only doing it because Cruz’s poll numbers were improving.
The Houston Chronicle reported that the Cruz campaign declined comment about the lawsuit.
The US constitution says only “natural born citizens” can be president. “If he displays the type of prejudice he did against New Yorkers, I don’t think he’s fit for the office”.
Asked to say where he differs with Trump on national security, Cruz flatly replied, “To be honest, I don’t know what Trump’s position is”.
“He talks about he’s going to be Robin Hood … then you find out that on his personal disclosure form he didn’t disclose that he’s borrowing a lot of money”, Trump said.
