Babies in U.S. born with microcephaly
According to the Sacramento Bee, both cases occurred sometime this year, but officials are declining to disclose where in the state the babies were born, or any further information about the infected mothers.
“This is a sobering reminder for Californians that Zika can cause serious harm to a developing fetus”, Smith said.
Neither baby was born in Riverside or San Bernardino counties, and no pregnant women have tested positive for the virus here, county health officials confirmed.
Governor Bentley approved the use of emergency funds up to $250,000 to assist in mosquito control efforts, after the Alabama Department of Public Health requested assistance with Zika mitigation funding.
The virus is spread by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which also spreads several other unsafe tropical diseases.
“Our surveillance activities include working with hospitals and other health care providers who notify us if and when a possible Zika case is diagnosed, “Welch said”.
The two primary mosquito species capable of transmitting Zika – Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus – have been found in 12 California counties. “This case reminds us that anyone traveling to a Zika affected area should be aware of the risks”, said John Felton, President and CEO of RiverStone Health and the Yellowstone County Health Officer.
The impact immediately appeared to be more successful than earlier mosquito control techniques, said Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
There is no Zika vaccine yet, but researchers said they are making progress. No other details regarding the mothers and their babies were provided by health officials, the Los Angeles Times reported. The Defense Department has taken steps to monitor and control the mosquito populations responsible for carrying the Zika virus. A total of 21 infections have been confirmed in pregnant women.
KGO TV first reported late Thursday that one of the babies had been born several months ago at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley. “There isn’t local transmission in IL so far”.
