Baby Born at San Diego Padres Game
Petco Park announced that a baby boy was born during Thursday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants, the first in the ballpark’s 11-season history. Bumgarner put two on ahead of Norris, who lined a three-run shot that bounced off the top of the right-field wall. But, after a leadoff double from Derek Norris, a sacrifice bunt from Melvin Upton Jr., and an intentional walk to Brett Wallace, Amarista stepped to the plate with runners on the corners.
Craig Kimbrel (4-2) pitched the ninth to earn the win.
During the 3rd inning, a nurse assisted with the unexpected delivery. We have four games with the Dodgers next week at home.
The Friars tied it back up in the eighth, when Bumgarner had finally been pulled after 120 pitches.
Brandon Crawford danced home the tiebreaking run in the fifth inning, starting abruptly off third base and causing right-hander Ian Kennedy to step off the rubber with the wrong foot; umpires immediately signaled a balk. He struck out five.
He departed with a 4-3 lead yet came no closer to becoming the Giants’ first 20-game victor since Bill Swift and John Burkett in 1993. Kennedy also gave up his 30th home run of the year. But Alejandro De Aza cut into the lead with an RBI single in the third. The homer was his first since August 14. It was Crawford’s 20th of the season, one more than he had the last two seasons combined.
San Francisco narrowed that lead in the next inning. No such luck. The little ninja belted one over the heads of the shallow outfield to send the Giants packing with a series loss and fading hopes of playoff baseball.
Padres: 3B Yangervis Solarte (right hamstring cramp) was a late scratch from the lineup. He flied out as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning Thursday.
GIANTS: OF Hunter Pence (oblique) and 1B Brandon Belt (concussion) remain out and manager Bruce Bochy said he doesn’t expect either to play again this season.
“It’s not what we wanted or worked for”, said Bumgarner, speaking about the club’s impending elimination and not that the Giants bullpen blew what would’ve been his 19th win of the season.
