Baby kidnapped in Florida 18 years ago found alive in SC
The birth parents of a girl found safe 18 years after she was abducted from a Jacksonville hospital reunited with their daughter Saturday in SC.
Police arrested Williams, 51, on charges of kidnapping and interference with custody, and on Friday she agreed to be extradited to Florida.
Mobley, now 18-years-old, goes by another name and was found living in Walterboro, South Carolina.
‘We lost her for 18 years, ‘ Velma said. ‘We don’t want to lose her again.’ .
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced the finding of Kamiyah Mobley, now 18 years old, living in a town called Walterboro.
In the end, Aiken is hopeful and happy Mobley is being reunited with her biological family.
Police said the impostor had been roaming the hospital for 14 hours, asking about the Mobley baby. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said they received over 2,500 tips before solving the case.
“For law enforcement, even when a case is deemed cold, we’re always looking for new information, a tip or advancement in technology that furthers that investigation”, he said.
“She appears to be in good health”, Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams said at a press conference.
It wasn’t until 2016, Williams said, that tips led authorities from Florida to SC, where they found a young woman with Kamiyah’s birth date but a different name.
Shanara never forgot about her lost child, and used to put a piece of birthday cake in tin foil in the freezer every year on Kamiyah’s birthday, according to Newsday. ‘She act like she been talking to us all the time. Mobley cried against a caged window and said “Momma” when Williams waived extradition to Florida Friday morning, according to WXJT-TV.
“Just for anybody that’s lost hope, just keep hope alive, just keep praying, keep fighting”, he said. Authorities say Williams was passing Mobley off as her daughter.
Tesha Stephens, a cousin of Williams, told reporters on Friday evening that Mobley, whom they have known as Alexis, was now holding up. Instead, the stranger left the room with her baby girl.
“This is what we strive for; justice for our victims, no matter how long it takes”, said the sheriff.
Hospital staff believed the woman was a member of Mobley’s family, which is why no one questioned her being in the room or holding the child. Within hours, the Jacksonville family were able to talk to her by video chat.
She declined to be interviewed by police and is also believed to have a criminal past.
Since her arrest, Williams has been charged with kidnapping reported WJXT.
