Badgers football: UW up in the rankings
ABOUT WISCONSIN (1-1): Clement is expected to miss next week’s home tilt with Hawaii as well, although Dare Ogunbowale has performed well in his stead, leading the team with 121 yards rushing and ranking second with nine receptions.
Two Wisconsin defenders, linebacker Leon Jacobs and defensive back Derrick Tindal, were ejected in the game for targeting.
“There’s always the gray, and yet it’s been clear, the officials are always going to err on the side of player safety”, Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said.
Jacobs was ejected after a hit on Troy’s Brandon Silvers a split-second after the Trojans quarterback had released what turned out to be an incomplete pass.
Wisconsin has never had a season in which it has thrown more often than run since the post-World War II era of college football began in 1946, but this edition of the Badgers has done exactly that through their first two games, attempting 75 passes versus 66 runs.
There was also a delay late in the fourth-quarter when the stadium’s fire alarm went off. There was no fire.
Safety Michael Caputo took the politically correct path.
Don’t overlook the very accurate sophomore quarterback Brandon Silvers.
Despite a pair of losses against power conference teams, Wisconsin and N.C. State, Johnson is confident the Trojans can get back in the Sun Belt title hunt.
Stave looked sharp during a two-minute drill to close the first half, throwing a pair of passes to wide receiver Alex Erickson and scrambling four yards for a score as Wisconsin took a 14-3 lead into halftime.
However, while the Trojans were no match for the powerful Badgers, the future remains bright for Troy heading into its bye week. “I wasn’t happy about that”, Silvers said. He’ll never be the best player on the field, but he will do his job, and has put three years of his career stacked full of ups and downs behind him. – The offense converted just 3-of-10 third down chances.
Orr saw significant snaps with the first-team defense during fall camp when Jacobs and T.J. Edwards – the Badgers’ other starter at inside linebacker – were both injured.
It all started with stopping Troy’s running game. The offensive and defensive specialist rushed for 41 yards on just 2 carries while helping the Badgers secondary keep the Trojans in check in the passing game. The ground attack was improved, but still fell short of 200 yards. Stave had three completions of 30 yards or more on the day and Wisconsin rolled up 401 yards of total offense-199 on the ground and 202 in the air.
With the win, Wisconsin became the eighth program from one of the five power conferences with 100 victories since 2005.
