Badgers hoping to rebound after Big Ten opening loss
Not having him available for the Northwestern game could be a big blow – the Wildcats might be the toughest team remaining on Iowa’s schedule and they have an extremely stout defense, so not having one of Iowa’s best offensive weapons available would be unfortunate – but hopefully he’s able to return for the final five games of the regular season (and any postseason action Iowa sees). All the Badgers could muster was a pair of field goals. Iowa recovered and the game took another unexpected turn.
“I didn’t know that”, King said. “I’m so happy that it happened”. The end of the year, you’ll get what you earn, and the thing we’ve got to focus on, the opportunity that we have is this next week against Nebraska. He twice intercepted Wisconsin quarterback Joel Stave and became the first Iowa player since Tyler Sash in 2009 to record more than one multiple interception games in the same season.
Stave succumbed to pressure on the first play of the subsequent series, when Iowa defensive lineman Drew Ott forced a fumble, which was picked up by defensive end Nate Meier and taken to the Badgers’ 15-yard line. Wisconsin’s top-five defense held Beathard to just 77 yards passing on nine completions. Not many people expected the Hawkeyes to start the year 4-0, but this group of guys might be more talented than people have really given them credit for. “What a great time for that”.
“This is just a real positive chapter for our football team”, Ferentz said. Taiwan Deal had 59 yards on 15 carries and Dare Ogunbowale finished with only 28 yards on 11 attempts. Michigan has given up only 14 total points in its last four games, and Jim Harbaugh has masterfully gotten a game manager quarterback into his comfort zone. “We came up with a few big plays”. However, even though the Badgers were 3-1, it was hard to think Iowa would win.
But Stave tripped and dropped the ball while falling. The teen victim says he was mildly teasing his friend, who is a Badgers fan, about the Iowa win. “It had a huge part in the result of this game, obviously”.
Iowa now sits atop the Big Ten West, along with the 5-0, No. 16 Northwestern Wildcats, who blanked the Minnesota Golden Gophers 27-0 in Evanston, Il. today.
Iowa’s offense struggled all day, but the Hawkeye defense did not allow a touchdown. The Golden Gophers also failed to convert on all three of its fourth down conversion attempts.
Nick Scott ran for a touchdown, Mike Gesicki caught one and Joey Julius kicked two field goals for the Nittany Lions (4-1).
