Badgers upset by UW-Milwaukee, first loss to Panthers since 1992
The Wisconsin Badgers will play host to their second in-state opponent in as many games Saturday when the Marquette Golden Eagles come to town.
The battle for bragging rights in the state of Wisconsin play out Saturday when the Golden Eagles of Marquette travel to face the Badgers of Wisconsin.
“Tonight, we played the game the way he taught me to play it”, said Jeter, who coached with Ryan at Platteville, Milwaukee and Wisconsin.
After struggling to take a 35-29 halftime lead, the Terrapins (9-1) made their first eight shots from the field after intermission during a 27-11 run that made it 62-40.
Ellenson was the jewel of the recruiting class and the 6-foot-11 forward is averaging 18.0 points and 8.7 rebounds during the winning streak, joining the 6-11 Fischer to form a formidable duo in the lane.
The Badgers have a quick turnaround, as another in-state rival in Marquette comes to the Kohl Center Saturday with tip-off set for 12:30 p.m. Bronson Koenig hit a late 3 to give Wisconsin a chance, but missed a 3 point shot with under 3 seconds to play.
“We had some looks”, Ryan said.
UW has lost three home games this season by a combined five points. Wisconsin led by 12 a little more than five minutes into the second half when UW-Milwaukee took off on a 13-3 run to get the deficit down to two. It was his fifth double-double of the season. Both programs are going to play with a great deal of pride and urgency, and those types of efforts usually produce high-level games. But he missed a pair of free throws that could have tied the game with less than 25 seconds left. “There’s no way to really prepare for it, you just have to get through it and get used it”. Redshirt freshman Ethan Happ, who practiced against 2014 national player of the year Frank Kaminsky last season, has played relatively well averaging 10.7 points and 8.7 rebounds up front.
What happened was with just over three minutes remaining, the Panthers had tied the game, and just a minute later, they had taken the lead, a lead they would hold on to until the final buzzer sounded. Ellenson played 37 minutes and was involved on every play on the offensive end.
“We were in double bonus”, Koenig said, “so I probably should have drove and got some contact and got to the line”.
“When you go from the most efficient offense in the country to doing some of the things we’re doing now, tomorrow at practice you better to eliminate three of those for the next game”, Ryan said.
Duane Wilson added nine points, Haanif Cheatham added eight points and Sandy Cohen added seven for the Golden Eagles who had edges in points in the paint (36-16), fast-break points (17-2) and bench points (15-0).
Koenig settled for the third option and missed a long jumper from the right wing.
