Bafta winners DiCaprio, ‘The Revenant’ head Oscars race
The drama film “The Revenant” took home the most wins at this year’s British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards night which happened on Sunday.
DiCaprio said it was out of his hands, but expressed pride in what he called “not just a film, but an epic journey we all went on”.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” won an award for special visual effects, while “Inside Out” won in the animated film category.
Leonardo Dicaprio said he is feeing very overwhelmed with the response of the people and he also shared his winning by wishing her mother a very Happy Birthday.
Kate Winslet won her third BAFTA this year for Best Supporting Actress for “Steve Jobs”.
“I feel very strongly that it may possibly be Leo’s year”, Kate Winslet recently said by way of explaining why she would not be boycotting the Oscars later this month.
Supporting performer prizes went to Mark Rylance, a soft-spoken Soviet agent “Bridge of Spies, ” and Kate Winslet, an Apple executive in “Steve Jobs”.
Brooklyn won the first prize of the night, after being named outstanding British film.
Leonardo DiCaprio says shooting The Revenant was colder than being submerged in icy waters in the final scenes of Titanic.
Amy, the documentary on late singer Amy Winehouse, has been nominated for outstanding British film and best documentary.
‘To show the world what an incredible person she was, how intelligent, how witty, how handsome she was, before it all kind of got out of control and went a bit insane’. Previously films like “Romeo + Juliet” and “Four Wedding and a Funeral” won big time at the BAFTA awards.
The film’s director Steven Spielberg collected the award on his behalf as Rylance is performing in an off-Broadway play. See PA Story SHOWBIZ Baftas.
The ceremony at London’s Royal Opera House on Sunday was hosted by Stephen Fry.
Room was directed by Ireland’s Lenny Abrahamson, who accepted the award on Larson’s behalf as she was filming in Australia.

Presenting the award, Australian actress Rebel Wilson had a dig at the Oscars diversity row. The biggest differences these days is that BAFTA always has five nominees for its top prize, best film, whereas the Academy fluctuates – depending on vote totals – between five and 10 for its top prize, best picture; and the best film BAFTA victor is determined by a popular vote, not a preferential ballot, as is used by the Academy and the PGA.
The chair of Bafta Anne Morrison acknowledged the issue in her opening speech to the ceremony, which said those in the industry “have to admit” there is a problem.
“Only one of the great cinematic costume designers would come to an awards ceremony dressed as a bag lady”, he said.
